Confession: The main reason I started my National Boards was for the money.

Yes.  This is true, kind of.   I started the National Board journey for the 6K extra that I was going to get from my district.  I was thinking, I have no money saved up for my children to go to college and this will be it.  I will work my ass off and I will reap the rewards of cash money.  Right – its that easy- NOT!

Things were also getting stale for me at my job.  I hit the 10 year mark in my career as a school counselor.  As I have said I love my job, but sometimes you need a challenge to stay on your “A” game.  We need to have something to inspire us and want us to learn the nitty, gritty about why it is we went into this profession to begin with- right?

It was my time.  I also felt that I am in the stage of parenting where all I do is drive around like a nut picking up kids and dropping them off.  What about me time?  Where is that?  Let me tell you, the classes that I take every other week are my me time and NO ONE interrupts me during those 2 hours.

In my National Board journey I am currently in the working my ass off stage and all I can tell you is that it is amazing.  I have learned so much from the courses I am taking from Washington State University and I LOVE IT! The class is a bi- monthly LIVE webinar and there are school counselors involved from all over the country.  We don’t see each other on the screen and I love the fact that I am sitting at my kitchen table with a hot cup of tea in my hand, wearing pj’s, writing down notes and learning all about the prompts, components, propositions and standards- just to name a few!   There is no better way to take a class than in your pajamas, in my opinion, just sayin’.

Many teachers in my district have gone down this road and succeeded.  I took all the tips and tricks everyone told me and compiled it into one AMAZING list that is sure to help you – for sure.  Click here to see that list.

Currently I am taking Component 1 and Component 2 courses for this year.  Are there any other counselors out there also completing these components??  Let me know and we can work together!!

  2. Good day! I know this is kinda off topic but I’d figured I’d
ask. Would you be interested in trading links or maybe
guest authoring a blog post or vice-versa?
My site discusses a lot of the same subjects
as yours and I think we could greatly benefit
from each other. If you are interested feel free to send me an e-mail.
I look forward to hearing from you! Excellent blog by the

I just began my Component 1 and Component 2 last month and it feels very isolating to be completing this process as a school counselor – did you have a similar sentiment? Are you still looking for additional people to collaborate with?

If so, count me in 🙂

    • Hi! Awesome that you are working on your national boards! I am currently waiting for my results on component 1 and 2. It is very isolating but I did have great email friends with the Washington State University classes to help along the way. If you need any help or want to talk about it send me a private email and we can chat.
