My name is Vanessa Soito (soy-toe) but my school BFF’s just call me “Soito”. I started off my career in education as a teacher for 5 years. I quickly realized that when my students where upset or having a difficult day I wanted to be the one helping them but everything with education prevented that and frankly, even if I wanted to there was no time when you are managing a class. I knew my 2nd year in education that I had to be a school counselor. I quickly started my master classes and graduated with a Master’s in Counseling and Educational Psychology. I am now (and for the past 10 years) an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR with years of experience that I want to share with you.
This blog is about my reality. I am the only school counselor in my elementary school of over 500 students. Very rarely am I able to connect with my other counselor collegues – that is where you come in. We can all work together – kind of- and share ideas that are FUN, CREATIVE and REALISTIC (the most important).
I have a budget of $0, my office is a closet and my caseload is huge. Feel the same way?? I have yet to meet a school counselor that doesn’t.
My hope is that this blog will allow others in the field to connect, collaborate, and share ideas.
A couple of other cool facts about me:
- I LOVE traveling to National Parks and Forests. So far I have been to Acadia, Shenandoah, White Mountain National Forest, Yosemite and Sequoia. With a hope of going to Yellowstone in 2017.
2. I have a chocolate lab named Ellie and she is a great dog. I have never really been a dog person until she came into our lives. Now I feel like I am one of those people who tells you story about how funny their dog was when they were sleeping. I know it’s kind of annoying but look at how cute she is.
I hope you enjoy my website and all that I share.
